Season of the Witch is a unique 2.5D animated cinematic we created for Supercell’s Clash Royale, exploring the emotional origin story of one of its most iconic characters: the Witch. This time, we brought her tale to life through a distinctive paper puppet-inspired visual style.
This cinematic reveals the roots of the Witch: a kind-hearted young girl who forms a bond with the skeletons… and ultimately sacrifices herself to save them. Her skeletal companion brings her back from the dead, reborn as the powerful Witch we know in-game today.
End-To-End 2.5D Animation Production
This production was handled entirely by the Mooncolony team, including concept development, storyboarding, illustration, animation, 2DFX, and polish. This project saw close collaboration across our internal teams and Supercell to ensure the uniquely stylized aesthetic and narrative landed exactly as intended.
Once Supercell signed off on the storyboard, our illustration team—led by Lead Artist Alexandre Leoni and under the guidance of Art Director Joris Dewolf—got to work, crafting the beautifully textured, layered visuals that reflected the essence of paper puppetry. Working closely with animators, they ensured every element was prepped for rigging and motion.
Director Dave Ferguson and our animation team then breathed life (and death) into the characters—down to the drifting snowflakes and waves of magical energy. The result is a gorgeous cinematic that blends a feeling of handcrafted charm with an emotional backstory, wrapped up in the distinctive universe of Clash Royale.
This animation was incredibly well received by fans, gaining over 7 million views on YouTube alone. It was an honor and a pleasure for the team to be a part of it.
