A brand new game awaits in Eternia...and we helped to bring it to life!
We're absolutely buzzing to share that we partnered with Mattel, Amazon, and Bandit Island to create 480 cards for their brand new Masters of the Universe™: Legends Unite game, that was released in tandem with the epic movie directed by Travis Knight! We also created cinematic comic panels and in-game illustrations to accompany the game's launch.
A cooperative deck builder where both heroes and villains come together, the game allows up to 4 friends to unite legends including the mighty He-Man, the mystic Teela, the devious Skeletor, the fierce Evil-Lyn, and the ever-resourceful Man-At-Arms for super exciting card play!
This was a huge undertaking, and an extremely exciting one too! We put together a kick-ass crew (Masters of the Mooncolony Universe) to transform the characters, environments, and accessories from Masters of the Universe into colourful cards that captured the brand's playful essence.
The team leaned into both the magic and technology elements of Masters of the Universe, blending sword and sorcery with the fun spirit of the brand. The artistic philosophy was clear: sculptural, chiselled, and grounded. Graphically simplified, with visible ink drawing and cinematic lighting. A "hand-painted" texture brimming with expression and energy. Kinetic, bold VFX with sharp edges and chromatic aberration.
By the Power of Grayskull, everything came together to look pretty dang awesome.
Kinetic Energy
We leaned into the power and strength of the Masters of the Universe characters, so it was important that the cards highlighted this with their VFX, aka: illustrated kinetic energy! Our team composed the effects with sharp, solid geometric volumes that make explosions and flashes look like shards of broken glass. Chromatic aberration was applied to achieve a vibrant finish.
Lighting up Eternia
The lighting was a key tool for our artists to play with. Rather than being used as a physical simulation, they used it as a narrative device. With it, they prioritised emotional impact over realism. To amplify this, they used a limited colour palette and halo effects- check it out! 👇
In short: He Man rules, and we got to make some really cool art!
The Team
Special thanks to the entire Bandit Island team, with a shout-out to Eleonora Lisi, Douglas Simpson, Robert Woodburn, and Rebecca Deans!
